100 Degree Weather Will Continue Through The Fourth of July....But Look For Big Changes Sunday Afternoon

July 3, 2009 - 7:26pm

12:15 AM SATURDAY UPDATE:

Temperatures peaked out in the low 100s again on Friday with Shreveport Regional Airport hitting 102 for the second straight day. Monroe and Ruston both topped out at 100 which was also the same as yesterday. Hoewver, some parts of the Arklatex saw high temperatures that were about 2-3 lower than yesterday. Natchitoches reached 102 and Longview and Nacogdoches in Texas also had 102 which was 1 to 2 degrees and yesterday. Temperatures up north stayed just a bit below 100 again in DeQueen, Texarkansa and Eldorado with 96, 97 and 99 respectively. A few isolated thunderstorms popped up to the east, south and northwest of Shreveport with some briefly heavy storms in McCurtain county, Oklahoma and Lamar and Red River counties in Texas, but the vast majority of the Arklatex saw no rain at all.

The heat wave will continue through the Fourth of July with high temperatures in the 99-104 degree range on Saturday. However, there will be a shift in the upper level pattern which will lead to the approach of a cold front on Sunday which will lead to showers and thunderstorms. These storms will probably arrive during the midday or afternoon hours on Sunday and continue off and on Sunday night and possibly into Monday morning. A few storms could contain heavy rain and gusty winds. Rainfall amounts of 0.33"-1.0" are likely across most of the Arklatex as the front moves through. Drier air may shut off the shower activity by Monday afternoon but the showers and storms may return later Tuesday and Wednesday as the front stalls and moves back to the north as a warm front. As a result of all the cloudiness from Sunday through at least the middle of next week, we should have several days with sub 100 temperatures. There may even be a day or 2 with highs only in the upper 80s!
