COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS: Big 12 football enters week 2 action

MGN-Online
Tuesday, September 3, 2013 - 12:34pm

Week two features the first conference game of the season as West Virginia travels to Oklahoma. Seven teams continue non-league play while Iowa State is open.

The Big 12 is the only league with 50 percent of its teams ranked in both national polls and seventy percent receiving votes in the coaches edition.

Five of the nine games featured QBs making their first career starts (BU, K-State, OU, TT, WVU), including two freshman signal callers. Kansas is expected to be the sixth team with a new QB when it opens this Saturday.

The Big 12 had five rushers and five receivers gain over 100 yards. On defense, nine players recorded double-digit tackles.

Big 12 teams averaged 34.4 points while holding opponents to 15.8. Four of nine opponents were held to seven-or-fewer points.

The nine Big 12 teams combined for 38 offensive touchdowns – 19 via passing and 19 on the ground. There was one interception return for a touchdown and one kickoff return for a score.

The 19 touchdown passes averaged 36.8 yards and the 19 rushing touchdowns averaged 15.4 yards. Only 10 of the 38 touchdowns from scrimmage were 10 or fewer yards.

17 touchdown drives covered 50-plus yards in less than 2 minutes while eight scoring plays were over 50 yards.

Big 12 offenses converted 93.3 percent (28-of-30) of opportunities in the red zone into points.

In a balanced attack, Big 12 teams registered 324 running and 322 passing plays for an average of 71 offensive plays. Two teams – Texas Tech (80) and Oklahoma (83) surpassed the 80-play barrier.

The nine Big 12 teams averaged 5.1 yards rushing per attempt in the opening weekend. Last year just two schools (Baylor and Oklahoma State) averaged over five yards per carry for the season.

Big 12 Players of the Week were awarded to: Baker Mayfield, Texas Tech (offense), Caleb Lavey, Oklahoma State (defense) and B.J. Catalon, TCU (special teams).
