There's bad news for Ark-La-Tex residents who filed their taxes early. Some of those returns will probably be late. That's the word from several local tax preparers who say they recieved this email from the IRS late Thursday, just one day before several refund checks were supposed to arrive.
"The IRS has opened its filing season successfully this month, and refunds have started going out to many taxpayers. As with the start of any tax season, there are system validations that occur requiring some fine-tuning of our systems. As part of this, some taxpayers will receive refunds approximately one week later than initial projections they may have received, but these are still in line with historical refund delivery times."
However, the seven to fourteen-day delay is causing problems for some local residents, who filed early because they needed money fast. Lillian McClain went to Shreveport's Tax Pros to file her taxes and while she says she knows it's not the preparer's fault, she wishes the IRS would speed the process. "You're counting on your money on a specific date because you're telling people, well, I'm going to pay you on such and such day."
Rickey Greer, Tax Pros manager, says he's had calls and visits from customers waiting on their checks. "Hundreds, wouldn't be surprised if it's been thousands, we even get them from other tax companies calling us just to verify the stories that their tax preparers are telling them."
The IRS says most of the checks will be out within two weeks. To check the status of your refund, visit the website. https://sa2.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/en/irfofgetstatus.jsp
