Overweight pets put dents in owners' wallets

The obesity epedemic in the United States is getting larger, as health professionals report 50 percent of the population is overweight. However, that "population" isn't necessarily referring to humans.

Ark-La-Tex vets say they see a lot of overweight pets, especially when it comes to cats and dogs. So why so many? Dr. Valri E. Brown of the Cat & Dog Clinic in Shreveport cites over-feeding as a main cause. "Treats can be very fattening and table food as well as canned dog food, so I htink the main thing is that our pets don't need near as much to eat as sometimes owners think that they do," she said.
