LAKE MAUREPAS, LA — UPDATE: The Department of WIldlife and Fisheries says they've found the body of Daniel Mitchell, 51.
The agency says his body was found by a passing boater around 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 25. Local, State, and Federal search crews have been looking for Mitchell since he was reported missing Saturday.
Agents say Mitchell wasn't wearing a life jacket. There's still no word on how he got out of the boat.
ORIGINAL STORY: "I don't have much to say you know. I'm hurting right now," says Vester Brooks.
Vester Brooks grew up with Danny Mitchell and has known him for more than 40 years. He remembers the times they used to go hunting and fishing together. He's still in shock that the man he calls his adopted brother has been missing for the last two days.
"Everybody, we just love him you know. We hope for the best and we love their family. We praying for their family. We hope everything go well for them," says Brooks.
Authorities still don't know what caused the accident out on Lake Maurepas on Saturday. What they do know is that he was heading back to meet one of his friends when the accident happened.
"The suspect was supposedly leaving from Manchac back in route to Tickfaw River to pick up a friend at the boat launch," says Toby Miller from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
If he's not found alive Mitchell would be the seventeeth person to die from a boating accident this year in Louisiana. Two happened just on Saturday. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries just hopes that these accidents are a warning for other boaters when they're out on the water.
"Every year we have problems and every weekend we have accidents just about. The main thing come out here with a level head, act like you're supposed to and everyone will get home safely," says Miller.
Friends though still can't come to grips with the fact that Mitchell could be that latest victim.
"It's tough. It's tough then. It's still tough," says Charlie Herring.
