Fire Destroys Scotlandville Church

Fire Destroys Scotlandville Church

Fire officials still don't know the cause of a fire that gutted New Prospect Baptist Church in Scotlandville.

Caution tape remains outside New Prospect Baptist Church, a constant reminder of Saturday night's fire that destroyed the entire building.

"No one knows just exactly what to say you know, it happened just like that," said Delores Morrison. She is more than just a church member. She is the stepmother of the current reverend, Rev. Evos Morrison, and widow of the late Reverend Lynn Morrison, Sr.

"We all was devastated, things just happened so quick. I just couldn't understand. They called and told me the church was on fire, but I figured it was just a few flames, and they could soon put it out. I didn't have no idea it was like that," said Morrison.

It took firefighters about two hours to tame the blaze. Four departments responded to the scene.

"We responded with mutual aid with Baton Rouge, they did a magnificent job, and Baker and Brownsville, they also did a magnificent job with helping us extinguish this fire," said Alsen Fire Chief Charleston J. O'Connor.

The congregation held Sunday's mass on the front lawn. Morrison said they plan to rebuild, despite a pretty big setback.

"Oh no, we didn't have any insurance on the building," she said.

The cause remains unknown, arson has not been ruled out.

"You don't rule out anything until you have all your evidence," said O'Connor.

Morrison said that her stepson was at the church minutes before they got the call.

"He went on back to the church and lit the heater.... he said about 15 minutes after he left, or something like that, someone was calling him saying church was on fire," she said.

In all, the congregation has about 100 members.
