Shreveport (KMSS) — Police have identified a local child who died after he was hit by school bus in north Shreveport Thursday afternoon.
On Thursday at around 4:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Winter Garden Drive near Addison Street in the North Highlands neighborhood. When police arrived at the scene, they learned a 6-year-old child was seriously injured after being struck by a Caddo Parish School bus just moments after he stepped off.
The child, whom was identified as Brenden Houston, later died at University Health Medical Center.
Investigators were called to the scene shortly afterward. Detectives determined Houston was hit by a bus driven by Debra Kay Stevens, 59, of Hosston, Louisiana, as she turned onto Winter Garden Drive from Addison Street.
It is believed the child, after getting off the school bus along with a group of children, may have veered out of the sight of Stevens and was thought to be clear of the bus prior to her driving away. Investigators are in the process of reviewing video surveillance from the bus for more details on the tragic event.
In accordance with state laws, Stevens was taken to a local hospital for standard toxicological screening. While impairment is not suspected in the crash, the investigation remains underway.
