SHREVEPORT, La. (KMSS) — Shreveport received a dose of good news this week when nerdwallet.com ranked it No. 20 among America’s fastest-growing cities.
The study analyzed 475 cities to find cities that are growing in population, employment and income. They were then ranked according to growth rates in those categories.
Between 2007 and 2011, Shreveport showed a 3.1 percent increase in population over 16 years of age; a 1.9 percent increase in employment; and a 7.8 percent rise in median income.
"For the last several decades, anemic population growth has plagued not only Shreveport, but all of Louisiana,’’ Mayor Cedric Glover said. `` We have missed much of the population growth experienced by other states within the Sunbelt region. Since the 1980's, most of Louisiana's growth has been largely cannibalistic. Essentially we've shifted population back and forth across city and parish lines without any real net growth.
The only other Louisiana city to make the top 20 was New Orleans, which ranked first.
