ROTC hold activation ceremony
Natchitoches, LA (KMSS) — Northwestern State University’s Department of Military Science held an activation ceremony for the 64th Demon Battalion in which senior Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) cadets assumed leadership of the battalion.
Cadet Johnathan Cojocar of Natchitoches was recognized as cadet commander and announced the cadet chain of command, Executive Officer Cadet Major Henry Odele of Natchitoches, Cadet Captain Angela Thompson of Southfield, Mich.; Cadet Captain Michelle Higson of Conway, S.C.; Cadet Captain Ebony Vaughn of Texarkana, Texas; Cadet Captain Kelbry Price of Coushatta and Cadet Captain Angel Salom-Acosta of Fort Polk. Louisiana State University-Shreveport ROTC Company Commander, Cadet Captain Garrett Simmons of Shreveport, was also recognized with his chain of command, Cadet Major William Tenney of Shreveport, Cadet Captain Erica Anderson of Shreveport, Cadet Captain Kimberly Taylor of Leesville and Cadet Major Timothy Chung of Natchitoches, who narrated the program.
During the ceremony Cojocar and Lt. Col. William Macky Underwood, head of the Department of Military Science, uncased the unit’s colors, which signify esprit de corps, courage and tradition.
“The 64th Demon Battalion training and curriculum throughout the year will try the cadets’ scholastic, athletic and leadership abilities and prepare each cadet for their future career path,” Underwood said. “Failure is not an option but success can be guaranteed with a strong work ethic, a willingness to improve, a team-building attitude and a strong sense of morals and values.”
Underwood presented Green to Gold certificates to Sgt. 1st Class Wendell Marks and Spc. Joel Fantauzzi. The Army awards Green to Gold Scholarships to active duty soldiers that enables them to return to college to earn a degree and a commission through ROTC. Underwood also recognized cadets for achievements during the summer. Cojocar, Odele, Thompson, Higson, Vaughn, Price, Salom-Acosta, Simmons, Tenney, Anderson, Chung, Cadet Miguel Garcia of Cheswick, Penn., and Cadet Walter Floyd of DeRidder were recognized for attending Leadership Development Assessment Course (LDAC) at Fort Lewis, Wash. Cadet Devorta Pratt of Mansfield, Cadet John Broughton of Keithville and Cadet Sarahjane Sablay of Leesville attended Leadership Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky. Garcia attended Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Ga. Cadet Jordan Cotto of Leesville and Cadet Andrew Hinojosa were recognized for receiving ROTC scholarships.
