Ringgold considers getting rid of police department
Ringgold, LA — Ringgold is considering getting rid of it's police department in favor of the Bienville Sheriff.
According to Mayor Stephone Taylor, the city's operating budget is about $325,000 and the police department costs over $300,00.
Even though getting rid of the department would cost 5 people to lose their jobs, it would save the city $100,000 annually.
One option the mayor was toying with was to raise taxes, but with only 654 household, it wouldn't be enough.
While the mayor is focusing on how to save the city money, about a third of the town is focusing on how to remove the mayor. The petition group circulated a petition that received well over the require amount of signatures for a special election in April.
The petition group thinks that the mayor has an ulterior motive for wanting to cut the police department, and it isn't in the city's best interest.
When Fox 33 was in Ringgold, we couldn't find anybody who supported the mayor's proposal, so with a special election coming in April, the mayor must be wondering how his decision could effect his future as the mayor.
