New York, NY — National Suicide Prevention Week will be observed this year from September 8th through 14th.
John Fleming, U.S. Representative for Louisiana's 4th congressional district, has partnered with the National Association of Broadcasters and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to launch a new public service announcement (PSA), titled "Signs", to inform the public of the warning signs of depression and suicide.
“We applaud Representative Fleming and all the members of Congress for participating in this national educational campaign. Together, we hope to create a world without suicide,” said Robert Gebbia, executive director of AFSP.
According to AFSP, in 2010, 38,364 suicides were reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If you break down the numbers, every 13.7 minutes that year, someone died as a result of suicide making it the 10th leading cause of death for Americans.
If you or someone you know is in crisis, help is available by calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255). For more information about suicide warning signs visit www.afsp.org
