PHOENIX (AP) - President Barack Obama is vowing to veto a
defense spending bill if it's "loaded with a bunch of pork."

In his comments yesterday in Phoenix to the Veterans of Foreign
Wars, Obama accused the defense establishment and members of
Congress of draining the military budget with "exotic projects."

Obama also thanked American veterans, and praised U.S. fighting
forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In Afghanistan, he said U.S. troops are trying to secure polling
places in advance of Thursday's elections. As for Iraq, Obama
reiterated his commitment to remove all combat brigades by the end
of next August and to remove remaining troops from the country by
the end of 2011.

Even as he discussed military issues, Obama didn't leave behind
the debate about health care reform. He said his administration is
committed to increased spending on VA health care. And he added,
"One thing that reform won't change is veterans' health care." He
told the veterans, "No one is going to take away your benefits."
