Volunteers of America Shreveport is looking to bring more affordable housing for veterans in the area.

The organization is currently in negotiations with the City of Shreveport to lease vacant lots in the Ledbetter Heights Community.

“We recognize the need for affordable housing for this area, in general for veterans, that's our preference for this development; we are trying to address these needs," said Brian Byrd who works with the organization.

According to the United States Department of Veteran Affairs, more than 62,000 veterans are homeless in America with some lacking funds to even afford basic housing.

Once negotiations are finished with the city, officials are planning to apply for Louisiana’s low income tax credit to help fund the project.
