Northwestern State University’s marching band will take on a new identity for the Dec. 31 AdvoCare V100 Bowl in Shreveport by filling in for the University of Arizona marching band.

Northwestern State is located in Natchitoches, La., just over an hour south of Shreveport.

“We are glad to have this opportunity to both showcase our band and help give the University of Arizona football program and its fans the best possible bowl experience, said Northwestern State Director of Bands Dr. Jeffrey C. Mathews. “Our band is excited about doing this. And we’ll be dressed in cardinal red and navy blue on Dec. 31. We have been working with the staff at the University of Arizona to learn about their game day performances and what they do to support the Wildcats.”

The Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band was a finalist for the 2011 Sudler Trophy, an award to identify and recognize collegiate marching bands of particular excellence that have made outstanding contributions to the American way of life. Past recipients of the Sudler Trophy include Florida, Notre Dame and UCLA.

NSU’s band participated in the 2011 New Year’s Day Parade and Festival in London. Northwestern State’s band was named one of the top eight in the country in 2008 by a college-oriented website. The band has accompanied the Northwestern State team to games at LSU, Baylor and TCU and has performed at halftime for the New Orleans Saints.

The University of Arizona is providing expenses for NSU’s band as well as additional support for the band program.

The AdvoCare V100 Bowl will be shown on ESPN with an 11:30 a.m. kickoff.
