Natchitoches — State Fire Marshal H. “Butch” Browning released information today relating to a residential fire occurring in Natchitoches Parish where the homeowner’s remains were discovered.
Yesterday, Natchitoches firefighters were dispatched to 1544 La. Hwy. 1226 at approximately 4:30 a.m. to find a single story wood frame residence engulfed in flames. After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters located remains believed to be that of 73 year old Cecil Wayne Fortner who lived alone in the community of Clarence. The remains of Fortner were released to Natchitoches Parish Coroner’s Agents for autopsy and a multi-agency investigation by Natchitoches Parish Authorities and the State Fire Marshal’s Office continues.
Investigators have determined the fire most likely originated in the living room area where the deceased was discovered but the cause of the fire has not yet been identified. It has not yet been determined if there were working smoke alarms in the home at the time of the fire. Investigators confirmed the victim would have celebrated his 73rd birthday today.
Fire Marshal Butch Browning stated, “Our investigators spent most of the morning on the scene and continue their efforts to determine the cause of this fire.”
