Minimum Wage Increases

ATLANTA (AP) - A federal minimum wage increase to $7.25 an hour in the midst of a painful recession is reviving an economic debate. Some fiscal conservatives warn businesses will have to lay off employees to pay for the extra 70 cents an hour. But, the Obama administration predicts the increase will generate an extra $5.5 billion in consumer spending over the next year.
