The Shreveport Police Put Out Their Quarterly Crime Stats And Are Happy To Report That Overall Crime In The City Is Down 6 Percent. From January To March There Have Been A Combined 3,019 Violent And Property Crimes Compared To Last March's Total Of 3,211. But Even With The Department's Record Lows Many Shreveport Residents Just Aren't Buying That Crime Is Down.
Samantha Colquitt, Resident
It Is Not Down And It Is Not Going To Go Down...It Is Steadily Going Up. They Are Just Trying To Make People Feel Better About It When They Tell Them It Is Going Down When It Is Not.
Leslie Pomplun, Resident
It Is The Same Story Different Day. Someone's Child Is Shot, Somebody Else's Mother Is Beat Up. Somebody's Father Is Robbed, Grandfather...It Is Not Going Down.
Chief Whitehorn Admits That Shreveport Does Have Its Fair Share Of Crime But He Says That The City Is Just As Safe If Not Safer Than Any Other Cities Its' Size.
Whitehorn
The Numbers Speak For Themselves. We Are Making Sure That We Are Doing All That We Can To Fight Crime In Shreveport. The Men And Women In The Shreveport Police Department Are Out Everyday Doing All That We Can.
Pomplun
And Maybe Whitehorn Can Do Something. I Mean He Is Really Trying, Him And Glover Have Tried...So Maybe They Can Do Something And Get It Taken Care Of.
Whitehorn Says Although The Department Is Having Close To A 40 Year Low In Crime, It Can Be Difficult To Show Citizens That Their Streets Are Getting Safer And That Crime Is Indeed Going Down.
Whitehorn
Perception Is Reality In The Eyes Of Those That Believe It. All I Can Do Is Put The Numbers Forward, Continue Doing The Great Work That We Are Doing With The Police Department, And Hopefully It Will Begin To Show That Shreveport Is A Safe Place.
