I Love the Ark-La-Tex: Nonnie's Place

Wednesday, August 7, 2013 - 8:25pm

With its pink writing on the window, Nonnie's Place in Grand Cane caught my eye when I first moved to the Ark-La-Tex, I'm a lover of all things pink.

When I  went in to the restaurant at 8334 Hwy 171, and tried the food, Nonnie's Place caught my tongue and my stomach too.

That's something owner Nonnie Young hears quite often, but not exactly in that same wording, I'm unique after all. She says that what sets her restaurant apart and keeps people coming back is the home cooking. Everything that can be made from scratch is, from onion rings, to curly fries, and even chocolate pie with meringue on top.

Those might be menu items, but menu items aren't all that Nonnie's Place offers. They have weekly specials that keep people checking their Facebook page to see which days they need to make sure to come by.

Their delicious specials weren't what I was in the mood for; instead I wanted to give their Big Daddy a go. A half pound burger, 2 hot dogs, a cup of chili, an almost obscene amount of delicious cheese, topped off with onions. What's not to love?

Chef Beth Ray warned me it was a lot of food, but I was sure I could handle it, until the Big Daddy was brought out to me.

I started with a knife and fork for my first bite, and wow did the Big Daddy tickle my taste buds, it was delicious. All of the flavors just melted together perfectly, forming a party in my mouth.

In fact, it was so delicious, I gave up on the knife and fork, they were just slowing me down in my quest to take down the Big Daddy.

And that's just another reason I love the Ark-La-Tex.
