Karmack, TX (KMSS) — For all intensive purposes, the Ark-La-Tex could be called swamp land, so there is no excuse for not taking a swamp tour, especially with Caddo Lake so close.
Knowing that, I called Caddo Outback Tours and scheduled the a tour of the swamp. Things started off a little shakey, I wasn't expecting the boat to be so wobbly, but once I actually got in the boat, I was ready to do.
Captain John Winn told me as much as I wanted to see an alligator, I might not; they generally just come out at night. But, I got lucky, spotting one even before we made it to the swamp! As excited as I was to see the alligator, I had to say "see you later alligator" and make my way on to the swamp.
Alligators weren't the only animal I could possibly see. Caddo Lake is home to all sorts of animals, from turkeys to feral hogs, bobcats, cougars and even something called a swamp rabbit.
I'm not sure what a swamp rabbit it, but it seems former president Jimmy Carter is not a fan. There are pictures and cartoons depicting him going after a swamp rabbit that was trying to join him while fishing.
I didn't find any of the mysterious swimming swamp rabbits, but I did see a ton of spectacularly swampy treasures. Cypress trees, Spanish moss, lily pads, and of course salvinia.
I was having so much fun, I didn't even notice when Captain John steered the boat back to the dock.
And that's just another reason I love the Ark-La-Tex!
