Gibsland Mayor Odell Key is 18 months into his 4 year term, but he's already hearing questions from local people about how he's managing the town finances. According to aldermen, Key has been running town hall affairs without an approved budget since he assumed the office in January 2011.
Gibsland alderman Marketris Jones told Fox 33 the town is now on a state non-compliance list for lack of financial records the state needs to perform an official audit. That means Gisbland is not eligible for grants for sewer or roads projects. Jones also told us that some people have been hired to work in town hall without aldermen's approval. "We've had a host of other people that has been in and out of there, have had salaries paid to these people, no monies have been approved for these positions," said Jones.
Bienville Parish Sheriff John Ballance confirms he is currently investigating the town's finances to see if any wrongdoing is taking place. "We're on a fact-finding mission," he said.
The District Attorney's office has issued subpoenas for the town's records. As of Friday, there's no word on when the information would be made available to investigators.
