First responders remembered at West-Fest parade
West, Texas (CNN) — The 2013 West-Fest celebration is underway in West, Texas.
Hundreds of people from all across the state attended Saturday's parade. And this year it was especially memorable.
The first 12 responders killed in the April plant explosion were honored. A firetruck carrying a banner in memory of those fallen responders drove through the streets of downtown as many marched in front of and behind it.
"I gotta tell you, it is great to be back with the people here in West, Texas. I was here the day after the explosion and I got to see the mayor working 24/7 - day after day. I got to look in the eyes and deep into the hearts of the people right here in West, Texas. You can see within their soul the spirits of being able to rise above the challenges they face," said Texas Attorney General, Gregg Abbott. "It's such an honor to get to come back and see the way they have overcome the challenge that was dealt to them."
