Nacogdoches County, Texas (KMSS) — Nacogdoches County Sheriff Jason Bridges said a local man was killed this morning by an apparent lightning strike. The 60-year-old man was standing in his backyard when it happened.
When deputies arrived on the scene at 11:30 a.m., the man was found in his lying on the ground near a tree in the backyard. A witness told law enforcement they heard a loud boom followed by a shaking of their house. A few minutes later, the victim was found outside.
Deputies discovered the tree had been clearly struck by lightning and a burn mark on the man's stomach.
The victim has been identified, but the sheriff's office is withholding the name, pending notification of kin. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Kerry Don Williamson.
Nacogdoches EMS also responded to the scene.
