Deadly fire kills 2 in Gilliam

Monday, March 3, 2014 - 5:06pm

Just before noon today, State Fire Marshal investigators were called to investigate a deadly fire that killed two people from Gilliam. It happened in a mobile home in the 5400 block of Community Street.

When neighbors noticed smoke coming from the mobile home just before 11:30, they immediately called the fire department. The nearest station isn't staffed, so it took Caddo Fire District 7 a while to get to the house. Neighbors tried to get into the house to rescue the residents, but the fire was too hot and smoky to get in.

First arriving firefighters found the two bedroom mobile home fully involved in flames. After the fire was brought under control, firefighters located the bodies of 35 year old Adonis Walker and his girlfriend, 32 year old Hanna Hawkins, in the master bedroom of the burned-out structure. The two fire victims occupied the home with two children who were away from the home attending school.

Investigators determined that the fire originated in a bedroom on the opposite end of the home from where the victims slept. Investigators have not yet identified the cause of the fire, but suspect electricity supplied to the home by extension cords played a role in the fire. There were no working smoke alarms in use in the home.

The bodies were processed on the scene by investigators and released to the Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office for autopsy. State Fire Marshal investigators, along with Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Deputies, continue to investigate the cause of this deadly fire.
