Clarinet recital set for September 30

Northwestern State University
Monday, September 23, 2013 - 10:29am

Northwestern State University Associate Professor of Clarinet Malena McLaren will present a recital Monday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free. The public is invited to attend.

McLaren will be accompanied by Elena Bogaczova on piano with special guest David Steele on clarinet.

The recital will include works by Miguel Yuste, Gerald Finzi, Andy Scott and Gary Schocker. The theme of the recital is “Capricho Pintoresco,” which is also the title of the first work to be performed. The title refers to a picturesque scene, and the music evokes both pensive and whimsical reflections.

“Each work to be performed on the recital contains gorgeous melodies that encourage individual reflections on a scene,” said McLaren. “Melodic ideas like these are simultaneously unique and universal, creating an effect that speaks to each of us individually. In my opinion they are the soul of music.”

McLaren said the first piece by Yuste is representative of her research on early 20th century Spanish clarinet music.

“In 2011, I was able to spend time in Madrid, Spain, where I was able to hear many performances and speak to Spanish clarinetists of all ages,” said McLaren. “This was an incredible experience which only fueled my desire to learn even more about this wonderful music that is little-known outside of Spain’s borders.”
