Chimp Haven celebrating for two reasons

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 - 5:32pm

The first 9 of 110 chimpanzees rescued from the New Iberia Research Center have arrived at Keithville's Chimp Haven. The rest are expected to arrive shortly; with 7 arriving tomorrow, and 95 more will arrive in the coming months, bringing the total number of chimpanzees at Chimp Haven to 231.

The new arrival of these chimpanzees will almost double to number of chimps retiring at the sanctuary. Until Tuesday, there were only 110 chimps living there.

The safe arrival of new chimpanzees isn't the only reason the non-profit is celebrating. The National Institutes of Health's Council Of Councils Working Group unanimously voted on limiting the future use of chimpanzees in biomedical and behavioral research.

While there is still a 60 day waiting period for public comments before the NIH votes on the subject, Chimp Haven is optimistic that the vote will pass and the lives of hundreds of chimpanzees with change dramatically for the better.
