CNN — A woman in Southern California has been sentenced to life in prison for cutting off her husband's penis. Michele Gile was in the court room and talked with the victim, who has since divorced his attacker.
"I'm hoping this will be the last time I ever have to see her."
A 62 year-old Garden Grove man barely looked at ex-wife, Catherine Kieu, as she entered a Santa Ana court room handcuffed.
It was sentencing day for the 50 year-old former realtor who was convicted of cutting off the unidentified victim's genitalia with a kitchen knife and then mutilating it in a garbage disposal.
"Her actions were as calculated, it was cold, it was callous as any murder in the first-degree. Probation is denied."
The judge rejected a defense plea for probation and dismissed the argument that Catherine Kieu should be given leniency because she's a model citizen who suffers from mental illness.
The victim, who described himself as feeling anxious and traumatized, spoke before the court and described how at the time of the crime, he and Kieu were splitting up.
Something he believes didn't want to happen. It was a despicable act he says done with vengeance, vanity and jealousy.
"This was not an act of war. This was not some horrible accident. This was not the result of some terrible disease. This was a cruel and calculated violation of a person's body and mind."
"This was a horrible event. In effect, the victim is serving -- is going to be serving a life sentence because of what the defendant did to him. She in turn deserves her life sentence."
