Baby fighting for life following alleged drag racing crash
Shreveport, La (KMSS) — A one-year-old is fighting for its life following a major wreck during a drag race on Greenwood Road Tuesday afternoon.
Shortly before 5:00 p.m., police were dispatched to the scene of a head on collision in the 4600 block of Greenwood Road near Marston Avenue. When officers arrived, they learned a car had collided with a truck.
The driver of the Car, Myron Thomas, 31, of Shreveport, was suffering from minor injuries. His passengers, Melvina Ealy, 29, and her one-year-old were both taken to a nearby hospital. The infant, who was not in a child safety seat at the time of the crash, was severely injured. Melvina reportedly suffered a broken leg during the crash.
According to the Shreveport Police Department, Thomas was heading westbound on Greenwood at a high rate of speed when he ran into the pick up. The driver of the truck was identified as Johnny Allen, 62, of Shreveport. He was reportedly traveling eastbound on Greenwood Road. He received only minor injuries.
Witnesses told investigators they saw an alleged drag race between Thomas and the driver of a Chevrolet Impala. He was identified as Calvin Beaner, Sr., 52, of Greenwood, Louisiana. All three drivers underwent toxicology tests. Thos results are pending.
Investigators are still working to determine what factors lead up to the crash. No persons involved in the wreck have been charged.
