The Caddo-Shreveport Financial Crimes Task Force  wants to remind you to make sure you get help from legitimate tax preparation agencies.

They are warning people of fly-by-night tax preparers.

Preparers intending to defraud customers take a huge amount from your tax returns and will tell you that you only got a small amount back from the government.

They can also take and use your sensitive information to commit identity theft.

Also take note, that getting someone who is not certified to file taxes just to save money, may actually cost you more down the line.

See the statement from Caddo-Shreveport Financial Crimes Task Force below:

In regards to prevention of identity theft during tax season, first and foremost, use a recognized tax professional or tax preparation agency. There are many people out there that have the intention to defraud you, so it is imperative that you use a trusted tax preparer. The "fly-by-night" preparer will obtain your information in an effort to steal your return. There are instances of the "fly-by-night" telling you that you have gotten a smaller return than you actually have and keeping the difference for themselves as well. There is also the chance that the preparer can cause you to defraud the government with cramming your return with fraudulent information.

Your main goal is to protect yours and your family's personal information. This is best represented by using a trusted tax preparation source. Don't try to save money by using a friend of a friend to prepare your taxes. This is how you become a victim. It also prolongs the amount of time there is between your filing and receipt of your return. Attention to detail makes the difference between becoming a victim or finding out that you owe the government because you didn't safeguard your information and keeping your information safe and receiving a timely correct return. Cutting corners can cost you, so spend the few extra dollars you would spend and use a professional tax preparation service. It makes a difference and can save you years of turmoil when it comes to filing your taxes.
