Three Haughton residents were arrested in connection with a string of thefts involving copper leads taken from welding trucks at area hotels.

Authorities arrested Christopher Glenn Harper, 32, Tonya Marie Kinsey, 31, and Michael Paul Wertman, 33, on multiple charges. They were taken into custody just before 1 a.m. after an off-duty Bossier City police officer working security at the Microtel Inn and Suites in the 2700 block of Village Lane saw the trio acting suspiciously around a welding truck in the parking lot.

The officer stopped the suspects in their SUV as they left the parking lot and found two spools of welding leads, two wheel rims and tires. Detectives determined one of spools came from the truck at the Microtel and the other was stolen during a theft earlier in the evening at another location.

Police believe the rims and tires were taken out of a vehicle in the parking lot of the Comfort Suites hotel in the 7900 block of East Texas Street. Along with the stolen property, police recovered a small amount of marijuana from inside the suspects’ SUV. Kinsey’s 9-month old daughter was in the SUV with the suspects and was place in the custody of a relative.

Investigators were able to link the three suspects to at least six cases in Bossier City involving theft of copper welding leads from welding trucks.

The suspects were booked into the Bossier City Jail on charges of theft, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a minor. Harper was also found to have an outstanding arrest warrant from Caddo Parish.
