2 severely injured in suspected impaired driver crash

Two northwest Louisiana men were seriously injured Wednesday night after their vehicle ran off  the roadway.

Shortly after 9:00 p.m., troopers were dispatched to a one-vehicle wreck on US Highway 79, about 9 miles south of La Highway 9.

Crash investigators determined the truck, driven by Jodie Brazzel, 28, of Athens, was heading south on Hwy. 79 when it went went off the left side of the road, hit a culvert and overturned.

Brazzel was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was thrown from the pickup. He sustained moderate injuries. His passenger, Barry Adkins, 50, of Minden, who was also not wearing a belt buckle, was trapped in the truck following the wreck. Adkins was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Impairment is a suspected factor in this crash. A toxicology sample was obtained and submitted for analysis.

In 2012, Louisiana State Police Troop G investigated 29 fatal crashes and of those crashes, 28 percent involved impaired drivers.
