Shreveport, LA — UPDATED:
One person is in police custody and a child is fighting for his life following a shooting in east Shreveport Tuesday night.
At 6:22 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 7500 block of Fairfield Avenue to reports of shots fired. When police arrived at the scene, witness told them a 12-year-old was suffering from a single gunshot wound to his lower body from mishandling of a gun. He was quickly taken by emergency crews to a local hospital.
Authorities arrested Brandon Mack, 33, of Shreveport after he was developed as a suspect in the gunfire. Mack is the cousin of the victim.
During the investigation on Wednesday, officials discovered the shooting was accidental, but because Mack is an ex-con, he was charged with convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
He remains in serious condition.
Police remind individuals that guns are dangerous weapons and should always be handled with care.
