10th death in Louisiana linked to West Nile Virus, 175 infections for 2012

Monday, September 10, 2012 - 4:04pm

Another person in Louisiana has died from the West Nile virus making the total for the state 10 for the year.

So far there have been more than 175 reported infections in Louisiana in 2012. These cases are not linked to hurricane Isaac experts say, though some other factors may have caused this spike in West Nile cases this year.

"Possibly there was some interaction with the very warm winter,” Randy Veath, EBR Mosquito and Rodent Control, explained. “So, more mosquitoes may have survived.

“The fact that we didn't have much activity last year may have resulted in a lot more birds not being exposed to it, not having any immunity,” he continued. “Possibly a wet spring allowed for more bird babies to be born."

To reduce the risk you get infected you should apply repellant, wear long sleeved shorts and avoid wearing perfumes or colognes for extended periods of time.
