St. Landry Parish traffic stop turns into gunfight

Lousiana State Police detectives were called in to investigate an officer involved shooting.

On Wednesday, a St. Landry Parish sheriffs deputy stopped a van on northbound I-49 for following too close.

The van pulled into a gas station parking lot and stopped. Charles Martin, 61, got out of the van, pulled out a gun and fired at the deputy. The deputy reurned fire.

No one was injured.

After the gunfight, Martin and the passenger were taken into custody.

Martin was booked at the St. Landry Parish Jail for attempted first degree murder of a police officer. The passenger was questioned and released.

The case remains under investigation.
