Pair of school arrests prompts reaction from parents

A Caddo Parish teenager is charged with drug distribution after police say he sold Xanax pills to classmates. The 15-year-old Hamilton Terrace student was reportedly selling the medication for a dollar per pill. When two students became ill, police arrested the juvenile, whose name will not be released due to his age.

It was the second arrest in a local school this week. On Tuesday a 13-year-old was arrested when police say teachers discovered alcohol and a BB gun in his backpack. The Werner Park Elementary School student had reportedly been pointing the weapon at another student.

For Phaedra Sykes, the incidents are cause for concern. "As a parent, it hurts, even if it's not my child, because I mean, children are our future and if they're doing this at a young age now, what do you think they'll do when they really are able to do it legally?"

Peggy Henry says she thinks the school should beef up security. "They don't have to have metal detectors...but if that's what it takes to keep a child safe, I would use it," she said.

The teenager accused of selling Xanax must attend a school board hearing in addition to the criminal chages. The Werner Park student is charged with having a weapon on school property, aggravated assault, and possession of alcohol by a minor.
