More than 3 million reports of child abuse will be filed this year, according to Childhelp. They estimate 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 4 boys will be abused in some way before the age of 18. That's why many local communities are teaming up to recognize April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.
At the historic courthouse in Marshall, Texas, representatives from the Martin House, which helps abused children in Harrison and Gregg Counties, said it's important to honor the children who come forward to stop their abusers. "No child deserves to live in fear and few of us could imagine the tremendous courage it takes for a child to talk about what they’ve endured,” said Roxanne Sevenson, Executive Director of the Martin House.
There were 962 reports of child abuse in Harrison County last year. 219 of those were confirmed cases of abuse.
