Marshall High "Maverick" salon opens to public

Some Marshall High School students are styling their way to a brighter future. The school opened its student-run salon to the public last week, offering everything from cuts and waxes to relaxers and styling. There are 146 students involved in the classes, which are designed as a 4-year program.

Instructor Yulanda Roach says if students complete all 4 years, they can apply for their state license immediately after graduation, without needing additional classes. "To already be trained and in a profession, it'll make it so much easier for them to actually go out into the workforce and be a productive citizen in the community," she said.

You can get a basic haircut for $5, with the money going straight back to benefit the program. Services are by appointment only. To schedule one, call (903) 927-800 ext. 1095. Students are not paid directly for their work, but can receive tips.
