Evacuees return to North Caddo

Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 5:58pm

Many North Caddo residents are back in their homes tonight...after wildfires forced them to evacuate yesterday. About 1,500 acres have burned across the parish, including 600 acres in Oil City.

That's where Rose Coleman is checking up on her niece. "She's not feeling too good, she's pretty scared," Coleman says. That's partially because weather conditions have made these blazes so difficult to fight. Dry conditions and shifting winds have made it a huge challenege for fire crews to get them under control.

One crew member who drove a bulldozer says, "it was moving very fast. I couldn't get ahead of it with the bulldozers." Governor Bobby Jindal has ordered four National Guard helicopters to help combat area fires. They dropped water several times on the affected areas and stayed on hand to monitor the situation.

Fire officials now say all four Oil City fires are under control, but add that they're keeping a close eye on the situation.
