Barksdale airman killed in Afghanistan
The Ark-La-Tex has suffered a local casualty from the war in Afghanistan. 24-year-old Bryan Bell, an airman at Barksdale Air Force Base, was killed Thursday by an IED. The native Pennsylvanian lived on base with his wife, Alaina Bell, a manager of Shreveport-Barksdale's UPS Store.
Owner Preston Friedley says officials from Barksdale called him and asked him to be at the store when he delivered the news to Alaina. "We obviously knew the situation as they walked in the door and I think she was as shocked as we were," he said. Friedley describes the Bells as a happy young couple who contributed a great deal to the area. "They were very much a part of the military community here in our area and very much a part of Shreveport-Bossier City," he said.
According to his Facebook page, Bell had been deployed to both Iarq and Afganistan. He was a 2006 graduate of Harbor Creek High School near Erie, Pennsylvania.
