Grambling Falls in SWAC Tournament Opener

By GSU Sports Information Dept.

Grambling's postseason return didn't begin on a happy note as Mississippi Valley State broke open a tight game in the late innings to claim a 12-2 opening round victory.

The Tigers broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the third inning when Brandon Williams led off the inning with a single and scored on a triple into right field by Anthony Clifton. This would prove to be the Tigers' lone score until Williams once again scored on a Clifton ground out.

The Delta Devils made their way onto the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Willie Mays and Cody Price both scored on a two-out triple by Joel Gafford. Mays added a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Delta Devils a 4-1 lead in the seventh. Hogan Barnes and Curtis Ford each added homeruns.

Grambling State (21-27) faces the loser of the TSU/Jackson State contest on Friday at a time to be determined. The remainder of Wednesday's opening round games was postponed due to inclement weather and will resume play on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m.
