Go Red For Women Luncheon Held At El Dorado

By Bianya Tennerson

A Go Red For Women Luncheon Was Held Yesterday Afternoon At The El Dorado Casino. The Goal Was To Raise Money For Research And Simply Make Women More Aware Of Heart Disease, But Instead It Opened Their Eyes To New Information As Well As Gave Survivors A Chance To Share Their Stories And Encourage Others.

Susan Miller, Diagnosed With Cardio Sympathy At 50 Said, "I Had Congested Heart Failure Every Night For 4 Months. I Had Been Diagnosed With Acid Reflux And I Believed The Doctor. As It Turns Out, I Was Going Into Heart Failure Every Night. I Was Even Playing Tennis With Heart Failure, And One Night I Had A Heart Attack."

But Miller Now Looks At That Event As A Blessing Because She Was Finally Diagnosed Correctly. Like Most Women, Miller Had A History Of Heart Disease In Her Family. That Fact Alone, Warrants A Second Opinion Because Men And Women's Bodies Are Very Different.

Nichole Smith, The Heart Association Regional Director Said, "The Signs And Symptoms Are A Little Bit Different With Women Then Men. A Lot Of Times, Women Are Afraid To Speak Up. We're Busy Taking Care Of Children And Our Families And We're Working, And We've Kind Of Put Those Things To The Side."

But It Shouldn't Be Put On The Back Burner. Dr. Laura Murphy Who Gave A Lecture About The Causes And Warning Signs Of The Disease Says There Are Simple Ways To Prevent It.

Dr. Laura Miller Said, "They Need To Be Watching Their Cholesterol. They Need To Be Eating Low Fat Diets And Still Keep The Protein In. They Need To Be Not Smoking At All And Being Very Active."

Dr. Miller Also Says Walking For A Mere 30 Minutes Everyday Will Do The Trick And Prevent The Deaths Of More Than 440,000 Women This Year.
