Thieves Target Catalytic Converters

By Christina Erwin

Thieves In Shreveport Have A New Target...Catalytic Converters Off Of Your Vehicle. Shreveport Police Say Over Six Cases Alone Have Been Reported This Week. It Costs An Estimated 1200 Dollars To Replace A Converter Based On The Type Of Vehicle. Toyota Trucks Have Been The Main Vehicles That Are Being Targeted But Officials Say Any Car Is Susceptible.

Anything With A Little Distance Underneath Them, And A Lot Of These Cars Now Are Putting These Really Tall Wheels...22's And 24's. It Makes It A Lot Easier For Anyone To Get Underneath And Cut Them Off. And It Doesn't Take Long I've Heard Of Them Doing It In Five Or Ten Seconds.

Catalytic Converters Are A Hot Item Because They Contain Valuable Metal Such As Platinum, Palladium And Rhodium. Although Most Stolen Converters Only Sale For Between 25-50 Dollars , Thieves Still Benefit From The Easy To Steal Item.

If You Hit Ten Cars, You Can Get Up To $500. So It Doesn't Take Much And It Doesn't Take Long.

Officers Say Salvage And Scrap Shops Should Be Aware Of People Coming In To Sell Converters.

I Don't Get Too Many People Bringing Them In Because I'm Not Going To Pay Them What They Want. It Is Not Worth It To Me Because I Don't Want To Put My Neck On The Line.

If You Have Any Information Regarding These Recent Thefts You Can Call Detective Roger Courtney At 673-6985.
