Jerry Buss, Lakers Owner, Dead At 80

February 18, 2013 - 12:51pm

Jerry Buss, real estate magnate and longtime owner of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers, died Monday of an undisclosed form of cancer, his spokesman Bob Steiner said. Buss, 80, was a patient at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. His health had declined rapidly in recent weeks.

After building a real estate empire in the 1960s and ’70s, Buss bought the Lakers, the Los Angeles Kings NHL franchise, the Inglewood Forum in which the teams played, and a California ranch from Jack Kent Cooke in 1979 for $67.5 million. The Lakers alone were recently valued at $1 billion.

Under Buss, who brought the marketing concept of ‘Showtime’ to the Los Angeles team in the 1980s, the Lakers won 10 championships in 30-plus years. Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol were among the greats that played for the NBA franchise during Buss’s ownership. Former Lakers player Jerry West, grew to be one of the NBA’s most successful general managers while working for Buss, while Pat Riley and Phil Jackson became known among the NBA’s best head coaches.

A child of the Great Depression, Buss showed an uncanny ability to turn Lakers’ games into something more than an athletic event. Pricey courtside seats consistently were full of celebrity fans like Jack Nicholson and Dyan Cannon, who watched the best basketball players in the world win game-after-game and the Lakers Girls dance team entertain during breaks.

Buss is survived by daughters Jeanie and Janie and sons Jim and Johnny, all from his marriage to ex-wife JoAnn Mueller; sons Joey and Jesse, from a relationship with Karen Demel; and eight grandchildren.

Taylor Swift Sued For Stealing Money From a Canadian Hoedown

February 18, 2013 - 11:12am
Christopher Polk, Getty Images

Seems our neighbors to the north were just trying to throw a hoedown with blonde serial-dater Taylor Swift when she up and stole all their money after the epic event was canceled due to poor planning.

Bad T-Swizzle! BAD! You go to your room and think about what you’ve done.

Swift was hired to headline the huge Capitol Hoedown country concert in Ottawa in August 2012, and paid a whopping $2.5 million to do so. But when they event was nixed, she still held on to her massive paycheck.

The event coordinators, who had to return $1.8 million in ticket sales, are now suing Taylor, but one of her reps says she never made a deal with the ticket company and has yet to see the lawsuit. Which means she has yet to return the money she got for doing absolutely nothing.

Oh, Canada … a land where Nerf guns are weapons, hoedowns that never happen produce massive paydays that do, and the people who get screwed are far too polite to use the adult language us crass Americans would to express how we feel about it.

Adam Lambert Flawlessly Performs Full Version of Rihanna's 'Stay' in Korea [VIDEO]

February 18, 2013 - 10:42am

Adam Lambert teased us with a cover of Rihanna‘s ballad ‘Stay’ last week, hinting that it was a sign of things to come. Well now we know he meant that he was practicing for a performance. In South Korea.

The singer personified perfection in his “We Are Glamily” concert in Seoul, South Korea on Feb.17, covering the song and putting RiRi to shame. Not that she needs much help with that lately.

Watch Lambert’s version above, then compare it to Rihanna’s Grammy performance and tell us we’re wrong. We dare you.

It’s been a big few weeks for Lambert — back on Jan. 31, he received the We Are Family Unity Award in honor of his work with groups like The Trevor Project, Equality California and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

And of course when he turned 31 earlier this month, he got quite a gift: a lap dance from David Arquette.

Mindy McCready, a once-promising country singer who publicly struggled with substance abuse and other personal issues, was found dead Sunday of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 37.

The Cleburne County (AR) Sheriff’s Office issued a news release saying McCready was found dead of a single self-inflicted wound on the front porch of a home in Heber Springs, AR.

An insider told E! News that neighbors heard gunshots at McCready’s home and called police. “She shot herself and the dog,” added the source.

McCready’s suicide occurs just over a month after the sudden death of her boyfriend, David Wilson, 34, on Jan. 13. Her children Zander, 6, and her son with with Wilson, 9-month-old Zayne, were taken by authorities after family members questioned her ablilty to take care of them.

McCready had attempted suicide twice before; once in 2005, and by slashing her wrists in 2008.

Her hits include “Guys Do it All the Time”, and “Ten Thousand Angels”.

'SNL' Teaches Us How NOT to Act at Parties

February 17, 2013 - 1:59pm

Perhaps unintentionally, it looked as if there was a theme during last night’s ‘Saturday Night Live‘ (featuring Christoph Waltz as host). Important etiquette lessons crept into at least two sketches, both of which featured a woman whose behavior ruins a party.

Based on these two sketches, here are some party dos and don’ts:

DO try to fit in with the others.

DO ask questions. But not weird ones.

DO NOT interrupt a story.

DO NOT try to guess the end of a story. Allow the person to end it on their terms.

DO NOT stir up conversations about politics.

DO NOT flash your junk at people whom you’ve just met.

DO NOT bring your bedroom stories — especially when you’re the new person

You get the gist… hopefully. But to ensure that you never become “that person” at a party, you’d better check out the clips of “Tippy” and “Regine” included in this post. And whatever you do, never play the fool around an SNL cast member, or else you’re likely to see your bad behavior re-enacted in front of a national audience!

Beyonce Shows Off Her Flawlessness and Her Daughter in 'Life Is But a Dream' + on 'Oprah's Next Chapter' [PHOTO, VIDEO]

February 17, 2013 - 11:13am
HBO

Because Beyonce is pretty much both perfection and perfectionism personified, her HBO documentary ‘Life Is But a Dream’ and her episode of ‘Oprah‘s Next Chapter’ just solidified that for all of us.

Her TV (seriously, can we just call it BeyV?) takeover started with her big interview with the Big O, in which she touched upon her personal life — something she almost never discusses at all.

She started with motherhood, which she insisted, to quote ‘Jerry Maguire,’ completed her.

“It made everything make sense to me,” she gushed. “I couldn’t imagine my life if I didn’t have my daughter.” What’s Blue Ivy like? “Hilarious” and “fire” are two words Bey used to describe her and Jay-Z‘s little lady.

“Lord, I’ma have me a time!” she cried. Still, she wants another messiah to join Blue. “I definitely want another child,” Beyonce revealed. (Maybe this one will be named Red Vines. Like the candy.) “Maybe after this next tour, I’ll have another baby.”

As for her baby’s daddy and hubby, Beyonce, who’s notoriously quiet about Jay-Z, clearly loves her man. “We were friends for a year-and-a-half before we went on any date. To have someone you just like is important,” she said. “I would not be the woman I am if I did not go home to that man,” she said. “[He] just gives me such a foundation.”

God, why are they so cute?

Now onto her documentary, which begins with her daddy issues. (Those may explain her opening scenes in her ‘Suga Mama’ video.)

“I am feeling empty because of my relationship with my dad and I am so fragile at this point. I feel like my soul has been tarnished,” she laments. And she still manages to make you envy her while she’s talking about how sad she is, because she’s not wearing a stitch of makeup and still manages to look completely stunning. (Life isn’t fair.)

“At some point, you need your support system,” she explained of her decision to split professionally from her pops, Mathew Knowles. “I needed boundaries and my dad needed boundaries. It’s easy to get confused with this world that’s your job that you live and breathe every day, all day, and you don’t know when to turn it off. You need a break. I needed a break. I needed my dad … it was hard,” she said. “I had to sacrifice my relationship with my dad. But I had to let go.”

She talks about her miscarriage, which is a big reason she kept her pregnancy with Blue Ivy a secret for as long as she could — and adds an extra layer of douchebaggery to everyone who spread rumors about Bey never really being pregnant in the first place. She even plays a track she recorded about the trauma, in which she sings, a capella, “You took the life right outta me.”

We’ll wait while you grab your tissues.

Other highlights? Beyonce and Jay-Z crooning Coldplay‘s ‘Yellow’ to one another, which is adorable but evokes memories of WASP queen Gwyneth Paltrow dancing like a drunken aunt to Hov’s songs, and a special appearance by none other than Blue Ivy, who’s a perfect combination of her mom and pops.

Because of course she’s perfect. She’s a product of Beyonce.

Rapper Drake was turned away by security at the Playhouse in Hollywood Wednesday night, apparently to avoid any possible incidents between the rapper and Chris Brown, who was already inside the club.TMZ reports that Brown was in the nightclub celebrating the launch of the Popular Demand clothing line. Drake showed up at around midnight, and club security knew that Rihanna would be joining him later, so they told him he might want to take the party somewhere else.

You may remember that Drake’s and Brown’s entourages got into a brawl last summer at the nightclub W.i. P. that nearly wrecked the place.

Drake left the club without incident.

Yep, he lost his man card singing Valentine’s Day karaoke. Personally, I think it’s kinda sweet:) The falsetto is pushing it though…

'The Host' Featurette: Stephenie Meyer's Post-Apocalyptic Love Story

February 15, 2013 - 7:30pm
Open Road Films

We’re at an interesting crossroads for the new wave of young adult literature being adapted for the big screen. Sure, films like ‘Twilight‘ or ‘The Hunger Games‘ have shown that there is a sizable audience for these films, but yesterday’s poor opening day showing of ‘Beautiful Creatures‘ suggests that it takes more than just a series of modestly popular books to net a big screen audience. Perhaps author Stephenie Meyer will be enough to get people into the adaptation of her book ‘The Host‘ and here’s a new featurette with the author talking about the film.

The film looks familiar in that there’s a post-apocalyptic setting, and a love story about a young man (Max Irons) and woman (Saoirse Ronan) who were deeply in love and then separated, but the twist is that she’s been possessed by an alien spirit, yet part of the old person remains. That’s not a bad idea all things considered, but it’s likely to get the Romeo and Juliet treatment here.

The film comes out March 29, and then we’ll be getting ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones‘ in August. There are a number of the sorts of films in the works, but we also saw similar off-brand product hit after ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Twilight’ first showed up, so who’s to say if any of it will click with audiences. Here’s that featurette:
