2012 crime stats released
SHREVEPORT, La. (KMSS) — Overall crime in Shreveport is at one of its lowest points in 40 years according to the Shreveport Police Department. Shreveport Police say last year was the 3rd lowest year in overall crime since the department started keeping record.
There were 20 homicides reported in both 2012 and 2011. But there was a slight increase in all violent crimes of about one percent in 2012.
Mayor Cedric Glover and police officials reported a 2 percent increase for 2012, driven upward in large part because of an increase in shoplifting.
The department says while the numbers are low, there is always room for improvement.
“There is always areas in which we can improve, we look at what we have done in the past and what is effective,” said Spokesman Cpl. Marcus Hines.
So far in 2013, the city has had a total of four homicides.
Mayor Glover says he is concerned about the killings and that he will not be satisfied until there is a year with zero homicides in Shreveport.
