Water restored in Benton; boil water notice issued
Benton residents were without water for about 10 hours following a major water main break Tuesday morning.
Officials say it happened at around 1 a.m. when a 16" pipe burst on Airline Drive in the Palmetto Estates neighborhood. The break was caused by a leaking portion of the pipe that gave way.
Schools are providing students with bottled water, and the courthouse has been closed.
The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals issued a boil water notice until the drinking water is safe again. State officials were not able to give a time frame on how long the notice will last.
Crews restored water to Benton shortly before 11 a.m. and are currently working to restore pressure to the water line.
