WASKOM - A Waskom man has died after a tree fell on him while he was doing yardwork Thursday.

At around 11:00 a.m., dispatchers received a 911 call for an ambulance and fire units to go to the 800 block of Fox Hunting Rd. in Waskom. The caller said that he was inside the house and heard what he termed an “explosion” in his backyard.

He went to the area and found his father completely under a burning tree that he had been burning prior to cutting down. The son says he rolled as much of the tree as he could off of his father, but he was unable to remove the biggest part of the tree that lay on the his father's legs. Deputies found a separate fire of leaves and debris burning nearby. Deputies and fire personnel were able to remove the tree from the victim, and it appeared that he had multiple lacerations and burns, broken legs and was killed by the burning tree falling on top of him.

Judge Westy Meisenheimer pronounced the victim dead. The 61-year old victim was identified as Nathaniel Fletcher, of Waskom.
