An unrestrained driver died in a single vehicle crash in DeSoto Parish Monday afternoon.

On Monday at 4:32 p.m., Louisiana state police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Dixie Swim Club Road, half a mile west of US 171, in DeSoto Parish. According to investigating troopers, an SUV, driven by 56-year-old Courtney F. Smith III from Stonewall, LA, was traveling west on Dixie Swim Club Road when, for unknown reasons, Smith lost control of the vehicle as he tried to steer to the left. As a result, the vehicle spun out and went off the left side of the roadway. Then, the vehicle hit a shallow ditch and collided with two trees where the vehicle came to rest.

Smith was taken to a hospital in Shreveport where he later died. Smith was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but routine toxicology tests are pending.
