Shreveport – On Monday, June 8, 2011, troopers with the Louisiana State Police Insurance Fraud/Auto Theft Unit in Shreveport arrested three people from Shreveport and charged them each with one count of insurance fraud. The arrest was the result of an investigation into a complaint made to the Insurance Fraud/Auto Theft Unit in Shreveport by the Shreveport Police Department (SPD).
On October 28, 2009, Aisha Barnes (B/F; age 28), while employed as a Shreveport Police Officer, contacted SPD and reported that her 2008 Chevrolet Trail Blazer had been stolen. Afterwards, she contacted her automobile insurance carrier and filed a claim seeking restitution. Shortly after the report was filed, the Trail Blazer was located engulfed in flames in rural Caddo Parish near Blanchard, LA. Kaneesha Knuckles (B/F; age 21), a friend of Barnes, was supposedly borrowing the Trail Blazer at the time it was allegedly stolen.
The investigation found that Barnes, along with her brother, Thomas Williams (B/M; age 32) and Knuckles all conspired to have the vehicle stolen and burned in an effort to defraud the insurance company of money. Barnes, Williams, and Knuckles each confessed their involvement in the crime during an interview with detectives. The investigation further determined that Barnes was seeking to receive payment for the lost of her vehicle in order to relieve some of her existing financial burdens.
Barnes, who was on leave from SPD pending an Internal Affairs investigation, resigned her position prior to arrest warrants being issued.
At the conclusion of the investigation, arrest warrants were issued for Barnes, Williams, and Knuckles in Caddo Parish. On Wednesday, June 08, 2011, all three subjects voluntarily surrendered to troopers at the Caddo Correctional Center where they were each arrested and booked for one count of insurance fraud.
