Shreveport Police detectives have arrested a local man after he allegedly filed a false police report.

Investigators arrested 20 year old Joshua Cannon, of the 600 block of W. 74th Street in Shreveport, this morning after he admitted to them that he shot himself in the foot and fabricated a tale of an attempted robbery. Detectives seized a semi-automatic rifle with which they believe Cannon shot himself. Joshua Cannon was issued a misdemeanor summons charging him with one count of criminal mischief. Criminal mischief is defined in part by Louisiana law as the “giving of any false report or complaint to a sheriff, or his deputies, or to any officer of the law relative to the commission of, or an attempt to commit, a crime.”

The investigation began after Cannon, suffering a gunshot wound to the left foot, drove himself to the emergency room at LSUHSC in the early morning hours of October 11, 2010. Shreveport Police patrol officers were dispatched to the scene and Cannon advised them he was shot by an unknown male suspect who was trying to rob him in the 2900 block of Lakehurst Avenue.

Detectives were dispatched and immediately began their investigation. Investigators were able to locate a crime scene on Lakehurst Avenue but noted that some of the evidence found there did not support the victim’s initial account of the incident. Detectives continued to question the victim about those inconsistencies and he ultimately told them the truth.
