BATON ROUGE---LSU Board members next Friday are expected to get an update on the impact of state budget cuts on LSU System institutions.

As the Legislature headed toward adjournment on Monday, System campuses were facing $12.7 million in reductions for the current fiscal year and as much as $39 million in cutbacks for the new fiscal year that begins July 1st.

Elsewhere, board members are scheduled to consider approving the creation of a series of academic programs at LSU Alexandria (LSUA) and LSU Shreveport (LSUS).

At LSUS, supervisors will be asked to approve a Doctor of Education in Leadership degree that focuses on preparing graduates for positions as high-level administrators and personnel supervisors. Both LSU Board and the Louisiana Board of Regents have previously approved Letters of Intent for the LSUS Ed.D degree, which is a key feature of the new LSU Shreveport Commitment Plan, which is designed to deliver up to two dozen new degree and certificate programs at LSUS.

A start date for the Ed.D program is yet to be established, pending final approvals by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as well as the Board of Regents.

LSU Shreveport officials are also seeking board approval for Letters of Intent to establish a Master in Criminal Justice Studies degree as well as a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Arts. The BA in Digital Arts is meant to produce graduates for the state’s rapidly expanding number of digital video, animation, and interactive media companies, particularly in North Louisiana.

For LSUA, board members will consider Letters of Intent to set up three new academic programs, including a Bachelor of Science Degree in Radiologic Technology, a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, and a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science. Currently, more than 200 students are enrolled in LSUA’s allied health programs that have produced 250 graduates since 1999.

A tentative agenda for the June 8th meeting is attached. Committee sessions are scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. in the Board Meeting Room of the LSU System Building, 3810 West Lakeshore Drive, Baton Rouge. Committee meetings will be followed immediately by the Board’s June meeting.
