The latest job reports are looking up, but there's still one group suffering from disproportionate unemployment...veterans returning from overseas. The national jobless rate is at under 9 percent, according to the Labor Department, but for veterans, it can be up to 30 percent, according to advocacy group USA Cares.
On Tuesday the Bossier City Chamber of Commerce and Goodwill teamed up to fight that trend locally. A job fair at the civic center drew hundreds of veterans and their dependents who are looking for work. Over 40 potential employers signed up to scout out new talent. That includes Deanna Smith of Shreveport Job Corps, who said she saw several promising candidates. "Today in particular I was looking for a purchasing specialist. One of the young ladise that came in, she has a lot of background," she said.
Another fair is planned for the fall, with help from Hiring Our Heroes.
